Inside the DFE Protocol.

A look at the DFE Protocol as it runs alongside a live session, from the first checklist to the signed-off invoice. The screens below are from the working application.

Illustration of an engineer walking a studio team through the DFE Protocol on a monitor, with printed reports on the table.

Illustration. A DFE session review: the protocol runs in a browser next to the DAW, and the record is something everyone in the room can read.

01 · Before the session

Know what the session is for.

DFE Protocol new session screen with project name and session objective fields.
Start with a defined sessionEvery session opens with a project name and a stated objective. The protocol then moves through four phases: Define, Decide, Execute, Evaluate.
Pre-session readiness checklist with Yes, No and N/A answers for each question.
Pre-session readinessA short checklist confirms the objective is agreed by everyone in the room, the technical setup is finished, and the starting phase is clear before creative work begins.

02 · During the session

Every decision, on the record.

Session log showing timestamped phase changes, execution reversals and governance actions.
A timestamped log of what happenedPhase changes, execution reversals and governance actions are logged as they happen, each with a plain-language note on what changed and why. When someone asks later what happened at 10:36, the answer is already written down.
Execution reversal form with action reversed and reason fields, showing minus 8 stability points.
Reversals are logged, not argued aboutWhen finished work is reopened, the engineer records the action reversed and the reason. Each reversal carries a stability cost, so changes of direction become visible instead of silent.
Stability scoreStructurally Unstable
A live stability scoreA running score reflects how well the session is holding together, based on what has been logged so far. It tells the room where the session stands while there is still time to correct course.

03 · After the session

What it cost, in writing.

Invoice with hours booked, actual time used and total due, above a session sign-off approved by engineer and client.
Invoice and sign-offHours booked, time actually used and any additional charges roll into a clear total. Engineer and client each approve the session record, with a timestamp, so nothing is left open to dispute.

See it on your own sessions.
