Chapter 11: Taste Is Built, Not Installed

Technique can be copied. Settings can be duplicated. Presets can be loaded. Taste cannot.

Taste is the invisible filter behind every decision: what feels right, what feels like too much, what feels finished. It cannot be downloaded or purchased. It develops slowly, through repeated listening, comparison, and reflection.

This is what separates competence from identity. Engineers may be skilled, but their choices are shaped by their ears, judgment, and accumulated experience.

You can mimic another engineer’s process, but their taste cannot be transferred. It must be earned through exposure, patience, and attention.
