Chapter 10: You Can’t Break Rules You Don’t Understand
The idea of “no rules” is often romanticized.
Yet those who break rules effectively do not ignore fundamentals. They have internalized them. They know what should happen, which allows them to decide when it should not.
Without a foundation, “breaking rules” is merely guesswork. It is not innovation. Understanding structure provides context for intentional deviation.
Experience matters precisely because it allows for informed experimentation. Mastery of fundamentals creates freedom. Ignorance creates confusion.
Innovation does not come from rejecting structure; it comes from mastering it.
